When Your Body Is Tired but Your Spirit Is Willing: Honoring Both

“The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” – Matthew 26:41

Have you ever felt that tension?

You want to show up. You want to serve, to pray, to pour into others, to chase the calling God placed on your heart. But your body feels heavy. Your energy is drained. And you wonder: Does God expect me to push through?

As a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Christian woman, I have sat on both sides of that question — as a caregiver and as someone who has needed rest.

Here is what I have learned: Honoring God does not mean dishonoring the body He gave you.

The Myth of “Always On”

Many of us grew up believing that spiritual strength means ignoring physical limits. We wear exhaustion like a badge of honor. We say things like:

  • “I’ll rest when the work is done.”
  • “God will give me strength.” (while ignoring basic sleep, nutrition, and boundaries)

But Scripture never commands us to burn ourselves out in His name. Even Jesus withdrew from the crowds. He slept. He ate. He rested.

Your Body Is Not Your Enemy

Your fatigue is not a spiritual failure. Your chronic pain is not a lack of faith. Your need for medication, therapy, or medical care is not a betrayal of trust in God.

I tell my patients at QuCiL Health™ — and I tell myself — this truth:

God heals through rest, through medicine, through community, and sometimes through miracles. But He rarely heals through self-neglect.

Practical Ways to Honor Both Spirit and Body

When Your Spirit Is Willing… Honor Your Body By…
You want to pray for an hour Praying 10 minutes lying down with a heated blanket
You want to serve at church Asking for a seated role instead of standing
You want to fast Trying a modified fast (or fasting from something other than food)
You feel guilty resting Repeating: “Rest is holy. Even God rested on the seventh day.”
🕊️ A Prayer for the Weary but Willing

Lord, You see how tired I am. You also see how much I love You and want to serve You. Teach me that rest is not rebellion. Help me care for this body as the temple it is — not because I am weak, but because I am Yours. Amen.

Your Turn

If you have been pushing through while running on empty, I invite you to pause. Not because you are giving up. Because you are honoring the God who made you — body, mind, and spirit.

And if you need medical support for fatigue, chronic pain, or mental health, know that help is not a lack of faith. It is wisdom.

You can be tired AND faithful. You can rest AND be used by God.
